Very true, they buy and sell news. but they were protected by "freedom of news reporting"
Truth. Esp Chinese newspaper. They exaggerated innocent people. Motivate them to bark together.
HK has no hope, media are controlled by advertisers. If you do not pay them, they will write something bad about you. You know, HK people are so ignorant.

HK Reporters are much like the media in the western world. This comes as no surprise, but we get have allot of sleaze media associated with the good ones too.

I agree there arent any quality reporters in HK. I was a corporate communication executive for several years and I am so sick of dealing with them - they can write a story w/o understanding your product. Not to mention a complete lack of analytical skills.
You know what they will do after a press conference? They will all go to a nearby cafe and start "creating headlines" and "make up story" for tomorrow's news, they will compare news angle - just like highschool kids comparing homework.

Manman, how about we all start a thread on how PR people in HK are crap? Most of them don't know what they are doing. They just call you and tell you 'oh we have a new product out' and then never know how to sell a story. Maybe you should all go back to communications school!

A lot of PR are craps though. I am not - that's why I am now doing my MBA degree abroad and improve myself - I don't want to feel like shit... I no longer want to be one of "them"
And - to "now now", I know because as a PR, I have lots of media "friends" back then and they told me about what they will do after a press conference

Back then, I audit all daily news everyday at 7am in the morning and all you see is the same headline, same media angle - lucky they use different fonts!!!
I can say that among all local dailies, HK Economic Journal and maybe HKET (HK Economic Times) are more credible. For English, you got to go to regional papers for a credible stories.

I can't agree with you more. A lot of companies in HK spend more than 1/2 of their PR budget to protect corporate's image from being unresonably attacked by the media. 30% board's time are wasted to deal with these corporate dog patrols.
Another 1/2 of the PR budget is to make "friends" with those dirty reporters, talk show people. I wish ICAC will one day look into the HK media.

I don't think hong kong's newspapers are any worse than those tabloid newspapers in the west. they are the by-product of a competitive market place.
What Hong Kong missing is a credible impartial media with no commerical interest. RTHK (Radio TV HK) is fit to fill the role but its resources are limited.

Bar political news. The top journalists in China has much better quality than those in Hong Kong. I read an article about a journalist got many death-threats when he was investigating a corruption official.
He did not back down and eventually the news was heard by the Central government and the official arrested.
I can't imagine a journalist in Hong Kong will be brave enough to stand for what s/he believe in.

News in Hong Kong are very dry. Reporters only report on things happen within the territories. That's why even small matters can cause chaos in this town.
