When informed about the launch of this site, the question from friends invariably was "The dot.com world is coming down fast. Why start another site?"

The answer: It's not a business idea. The purpose is to fill a need, to explain the news and a web-site is the way to go. Besides, in a technological revolution, the stock market has nothing to do with real life.

And that reality is a fast-moving, complex world where changes are coming so thick and fast that many people are finding it hard to keep up.

LittleSpeck.com is, of course, not a newspaper, but it will perform an important function of one - explaining the broad trends in Singapore and the region, especially Indonesia and Malaysia.

In recent years so much has changed that there is hardly anyone - businessman, worker, student, parent - whose life is not affected by it, and it is only the beginning.

This is the age of Pokemon and broadband wonders, educational evolution and digital sex, where old values are being torn down, and new ones, many of them alien to the people, are promoted.

Influx of foreign talent, funky lifestyles, creative education, risk-taking are stirring up worries - and excitement. Yes, with the anxiety, comes a feeling that the future will be promising.

The younger generation of Internet-savvy, tech-skilled, youths are exuberant about the new borderless world that has revalued their talent. Life, for them, is definitely funkier.

In short, a new spirit is hanging over this little speck of a country. How can we catch it and nail it to the wall so that every one can see it and understand it?

The objectives of LittleSpeck.Com, which is free, are:

- Firstly, to contribute to make viewers better informed about the new era, so that they can cope with the changes. Only by being well informed - about Singapore and the region - can people exercise the right options for themselves and their children.

- Secondly, to draw upon some past experiences - despite the new economy - to help us face the uncertainties of the new world.

No nation can afford to leap into the new world, without keeping some of the old one. Every web-site, like every newspaper, has its own characteristic and identity.

LittleSpeck.com has neither an anti-government nor anti-opposition goal and if it criticises, as it has to, at times, it is because it is committed to Singapore,. It also wants to promote friendship with its neighbours. So please join in to make it work.
