Singapore

It looks like my company will send me to work in Singapore
this April. I have lived in Hong Kong and Beijing and really
liked it there, but have only spent 2 days in Singapore
and the main memory I have is that they closed all pubs
at 2am, which I was profoundly shocked by (well, at least
that changed I was told). I liked life in HK and Beijing
because it was exciting, had good nightlife and everything
and everyone is just generally crazy there.
How is Singapore? Is it really as sterile and boring as
everyone says? How easy is it to get out to Indonesia? Arent
there any crazy things to do in Singapore too?
I mean...I am not running away from the boring Austrian
mountains to end up on a boring tropical island. What would
be the point?
hk lover
My friend, I have some bad news for you. but first the good.
it is very pretty. It is always warm. there are so many
places to swim. you can be in bintan, indonesia in 45 minutes
by ferry. it's hyper organized and easy to figure out. ummmm....it's
warm.
I lived in singapore for 5 years. I was BORED for 4. and
i'm married, I have kids, I don't even go to pubs much anymore.
STILL it was snore. but you get used to it. You fall asleep.
Then you wind up in a real city again and think, oh my god,
I live in a village.
Look, if the job is good, makes you happy, it's not so bad.
I mean, rent is much cheaper (but all else is more $ than
hk), taxes are low (though hk are lower), it's safe (but
then is anything really these days?) and ummm...it's warm.
sorry mate. good luck.
Mao
Tse Tongue
Doesn't sound like Singapore is for you to be honest. Best
stay where you are.
zhouhaochen
oh God...that sounds terrible. Not even a little bit craziness
there?
A little bit of encouragement?
I signed the contract already.
Can I at least to water snowboarding instead of real snowboarding
there?
jasmine999
Get what you can out of Singapore and get out. I come from
london and Singapore is like a slap in the face with a wet
fish, so dull but also slightly rude in the process. But
shopping great and so close to everywhere else.
zhouhaochen
Oh God, I hate shopping.
Come on guys some encouragement PLEASE. I read on aonther
thread that the majority of expats like Singapore. There
has to be a reason.
I have not lived in a city for more than 9 months for the
last 7 years of my life and was really looking forward to
finally stay at one place for at least a few years....there
must be some crazy stuff out there!
Mao Tse Two
You know the old HR Department line, usually delivered when
they are selling you on a new overseas posting, that goes
something like "it is the sort of place where you have
to make your own fun" Singapore is a bit like that.
If you want the kind of night life that a Roman emperor
would envy it is possible here, I believe, but you will
really have to work at it. There is a dark and seemy side
to Singapore that most seem to miss, but it is not as obvious
as in other Asian towns.
Just one word of warning - if drugs were a part of your
previous lifestyle - well they arent now if you know what
is good for you.
Oh vienna
You can make it as crazy as you want. If you want it all
delivered to your doorstep...Get real and get out there
and ind it! Yes you can have fun, but you have to contribute,
unlike some of the lazy slobs who post here who want to
be spoon fed! Enjoy it!
zhouhaochen
hmmm. I mean, 4 million people, alcohol readily available,
basically everyone free to do what one feels like (for the
drugs part, I dont do that), there should be some fun involved
right?
And it must have a pretty cool mix of cultures, a bit like
HK, western, Chinese, Malay etc.
Throw in all the expats.
In the end thats what makes HK so special, so what is so
terribly different in Singapore?
well...
The difference is that the expats in HK are a fun lot but
those in SG are not. Yes, 1 million out of 4 are foreigners,
you'd expect some craziness exist, but...
My theory is that companies post their expats to places
that they think they'd fit in, so you end up having boring
expats here in boring SG...
Heart
of Darkness
"My theory is that companies post their expats to places
that they think they'd fit in, so you end up having boring
expats here in boring SG..." - thanks for that. The
funniest thing I have read here for ages So when did your
company post you here? Never ceases to amaze me how so many
expats in/from HK seem to have this need to run others down.
Why the insecurity boys and girls?
to OP. Singapoore is as boring as you want to make it. There
are plenty of people who want to go out and have a laugh,
the licencing laws are relaxing, and bars/clubs are staying
open later now. Compare this to BKK where the opposite is
happening.
As for other activities.. You mentioned wakeboarding, which
is v popular here. More and more people are going kitesurfing
in Indonesia and Thailand. There are plenty of places to
go mountain biking here and even more places close by in
Malaysia and Indonesia. The proximity of so many other countries
is also one of the great things about being here. It is
so easy to go away for the weekend or whatever. Msia is
just across the causeway, Indonesia 45mins by ferry etc
etc
Wild Place
Singapore became a great fun place earlier this year, when
the government legalised dancing on bar tops.
That change has transformed the island completely - the
place is wild now.
Singapore
Sucks!
It's tropical and warm..and warm..and warm, so if being
warm is fun, you will be in paradise.
Hey
There
Singapore is not a place where you can kick back and get
wild. Yeah, it has some fun but the people never take it
to the next level in wildness. It's just a place where people
are too concerned about the car they drive, the brand they're
wearing and the people they associate with. Bottom line,
it's a pretty place not a fun place.
hk
lover
Ok, I'm channeling some positive thoughts for you.
-water sports are a definite possibility. the water is dirty
but you get over it i suppose. sailing is becoming a thing
there I think.
-bintan, malaysian islands are nearby. malaysia walks on
the wild side more than singapore from what i've gathered
and it's a short trip away.
- Yes, the culture is very diff from beijing and hk. lots
of malay influence and indian too. its all kind of jumbled
together for a unique mix which will be interesting for
you. the downside is that the big cultural festivals are
disney-ised for mass consumption, best way to experience
it truly is to make some local friends and get invited to
their festivities. i never quite managed this but its worth
a try!
-the best thing about singapore is that its so easy to get
out. so many fabulous places nearby and then a clean, safe,
efficient environment to work in.
-shopping sucks there compared to where you've been. i take
it this is a plus for you so i'm inlcuding it!
-look, now that you know what its about, just get out there
and aggressively seek out the things that turn you on before
the heat and routine of work suck you into an abyss of nothing-going-on.

What sort of activities do you consider fun and "wild"
and then we can let you know if it's available in Singapore...
I've been really disappointed in the night life, not really
a "fun" place, seems the idea of fun is gathering
at dingy hawkers and eating...
toodle loodle
Hi i think singapore can be as exciting as you make it!
I also think that it will depend greatly on who your friends
are. some friends are boring some are exciting! i have lived
here for 10 years but still don't think i have done everything!
but then again i don't go out much! hope you have a great
time while in singapore.
Good

I suggest you book the next plane to Iraq, there's some
major 'craziness' going on down there.
Or
...
maybe try India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives ... all
pretty crazy right now.
zhouhaochen
sounds like overall mixed opinions, so there is hope, but
HK and Beijing will definetely not be topped (I seriously
could not think about a way to be bored in HK).
It all seems to be very controled, which is sensible, but
not always fun.
Not my dream city, but I am sure there will be stuff to
do. And I believe they have direct flights to China for
quick shots of complete crazyness.
Superdan
Well, you walk at 9pm on a Tuesday night on the streets
of Hong Kong or Tokyo and it is crowded with people eating,
shopping, drinking... Do the same in Singapore on a Tuesday
night, Wednesday night or Thursday night, and the bars and
restaurants are empty. There are you few clubs that are
full on Wednesdays or Thursdays (ladies night), but you
have to know which ones and where they are located.
expat
yorkshire
to Op, can you please let us know what CRAZY things you
are doing at the moment that you cant do in Singapore?
Many consider London to be a crazy city and most of the
pubs shut at 11:00 pm on the weekend.(I still shudder at
the thought)
zhouhaochen
that 11 oclock pub closing thing in London is simply unbearable!
One of the reasons for me to leave the place.
I still do not fully understand why Singapore doesn't have
what HK etc. have though. Loads of different cultures, ppl.
are free to do what they want, but still nothing (well at
least not much) happening. Thats at least the impression
I get from the replies above (and confirms with what I have
heard from other ppl who went there).
Shame really.
Superdan
The life of the average middle-class Singaporean follows
this pattern: Singaporeans go to foodhawkers after work,
then watch TV with mum, dad, uncle and auntie and then go
to bed early.
Life was a lot more happening 10 years ago.
Things are unlikely to change because the younger generation
is quieter than the previous generation.
you
make it fun
I don't think it matters where you live - if you want to
have fun and enjoy your time there, you will succeed. If
you are the type of person who expects other people to create
fun for you, you would likely be out of luck much of the
time no matter where you lived.
I'm curious too, what exactly do you mean by CRAZY?? Difficult
to address that issue without knowing what the heck you
are really talking about.
Otherpriorities
Average salary in Singapore is S$2,200. Cost of an HDB flats:
S$300 000. To this, add the cost of a car and education.
You can understand that people prefer to save money than
indulge in pubs, restaurants, clubs.
seriously...
OP, you got to tell us what you mean by fun and craziness.
Let us know what you have in mind and we can tell you for
sure whether you can find it in Singapore or not.
One man's meat is another's poison...
Well
the other side is
Its what you make it and I have always enjoyed myself here.
From a young single guy's point of view you it is great
cos good looking local girls ask YOU out all the time and
THEY do all the chasing, and not the other way.
It's a no-brainer really - come here and live the dream.
It's a man's world.
oldy
I am not that old... but not very young either. I think
that Singapore would be too slow for me when I was much
younger.
But now, having kids, all teenagers, I find Singapore THE
place for us. We are not wild as we were (thanks god) anymore,
and I feel quite comfortable raising my kids here.
So if you are young and wild, I am not too sure... Maybe
the best way for you is to come here for 2 weeks to check
it yourself.
Relative
To OP: You find Beijing fun???? Seriously? I found people
rude, a lot of people suffering from halitosis due to bad
oral hygiene and quite geared to rip you off. Servers at
the hotel were rather listless and really didn't give a
s*** but that was several years ago. So a matter of perspective,
no?
I guess Austria would be fun too for some people (NOT!!)
I notice you've avoided defining fun despite being asked
several times. Personally I think you should stay where
you are, as there's no pleasing some people based on many
of the replies on this board!
People never seem to appreciate when they have it good but
take the same person to a country where hardships, bad infrastructure
and rampant corruption are the order of the day, and all
of a sudden its rustic, wonderful, natural and beautiful.
I suppose if SG had their locals running around in loin
cloths or sarongs whatever and the "good old colonial
days " where kampongs and open smelly sewers were rampant,
it may have appealed a lot more to some as it may have been
considered quite charming and quaint! Go figure!!
open mind
I've been reading your posts and most of what you have been
writing, unfortunately, comes across as paranoia and negative
ness.
Why agitate yourself when you haven't even been here yet?
The only way to find out is to be here and experience the
life here.
And, if you don't find what you are looking for and you
are bounded to be here for 2 years, instead of wallowing
in self pity and so much negative ness, make it interesting.
You can always control your own happiness.
Life is what you make out of it from yourself. Make the
most out of your contracted life here, take the good and
the bad and learn from the experience.

I think Singapore is actually a fantastic city with plenty
of opportunities for "fun" (however you define
it).
Good nightlife (including pubs/clubs that stay open 24 hours,
eating places that are 24 hours, a whole range of nightlife
activities, etc.). Good food - from Chinese to Western that
a whole range of budgets.
To me, Singapore has everything any other generally big
city has.
(And then there's the standard stuff of how much cleaner
it is, how much safer it is, etc.)
Heck, if for some reason you don't find Singapore fun enough,
just jet over to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur for the weekend.
Most of all - if you're a single guy, Singapore is wonderful.
Just come with an open mind, you'll see.
Kumar
To OP, don't forget the bathhouses in Tanjong Pagar. I will
see you there, big boy
strange
... I am relocating from Europe (Slovakia) to Singapore,
so visited it in December.
I did not like it very much (being from a small town, close
to nature) - I found it way too crowded and noisy. I hope
the crowds in shops were because of Xmas. But I don't care
about shopping, so no problem.
So to enjoy myself there, I will find my things to do (sports
mainly) and guess will be happy. And I am sure with the
right friends any place is fun...!
...When I was there, a friend visited me over weekend, he
was just on holiday in Thailand.
We agreed on what we felt strange in Singapore - people
just did not look too happy... One can say, it is a city,
it is normal, this anonymous feeling.
But there was something more to it...
... to me it was kind of a lack of temperament, a bit too
much serious world...
I have never been anywhere else in Asia, maybe that is normal.
(I wonder how would my reply look like in a few months...
hmm....
2 pages and OP still doesn't tell us what he or she has
in mind. He/She says in HK and BJ, fun and craziness just
spring up on you from nowhere but doesn't elaborate what
exactly this fun and craziness is.
Gazing into my crystal ball, I can see yet another whiny
(?) expat on his/her way here...
Got to agree
With you hmmm. Brace yourselves for another whiner to SG's
shores.
Also notice that despite the mixed views given, he seems
to dwell only on the negative.
Wish he'd stick to his "whiner" strudel up in
yonderland and save us all from his idea of "fun and
craziness," whatever that means.
Alpheus
Define fun and crazy? The meaning is obvious by the fact
the OP says you can find it in Beijing and Hong Kong:
- Oppressive government (see: Tibet)
- Rude, money-grubbing population
- See themselves as the light of Asia with a self-confidence
running into arrogance
- Lots of spitting
They can keep whatever it is they think they have up there.
Give me Singapore any day of the week.

If you ask most people in Europe what they think of Singapore,
they will say that it is boring. But most of the people
who live here really like it. Having lived here for 8 years
I have not met many people who are not enjoying their time
here. (This board does tend to attract a lot of winging
expat).
Last year we had a single 25 year-old rugby playing heavy
drinking Kiwi lad work with us for a year. He absolutely
loved it and didn't want to leave. Come with a positive
attitude and you will love it ......YAH

Hello. Well, for what it's worth, OP - I am Singaporean,
by the way - my feeling is that for many Brits and Americans,
finding happiness in Singapore takes a huge effort on their
part, but I have NEVER met an Italian (m or f) who didn't
absolutely love their life here. The sea here is a huge
disappointment for them, but there are "perks"
like paragliding in Malaysia on weekends, or scuba diving
in nearby countries.
Of course, Italians tend to be a bit of the "home-loving"
sort, and they are also really good at carrying a little
bubble of Italian atmosphere with them to breathe wherever
they go. But Singaporean-style "law and order"
doesn't seem to be a huge part of Italian culture, either,
does it? Yet they seem to be having a ball.
Just my 2 cents worth. Guess the question is: Are Austrians
more like Brits and Americans, or are they more like Italians?
Good luck, OP.
zhouhaochen
Interesting... are we more Italian or British-American.
I guess more British, though certainly not American. Italy
is just half an hour away but really quite different. However,
in my humble opinion it is also the greatest country I have
ever been to. Food, weather, people... a great place to
be!
rotinhell
zhouhaochen; Singapore is like any other city, it's what
you make of it. If you are a boring person, you'll find
Singapore boring. If you make your own excitement, Singapore
will be great for you.
I've found that over the years people who call such excellent
cities such as Dubai, Sydney, San Fran, Paris, Canberra,
Melbourne and LA boring are usually the most inane and boring
snobs around, but people with a 'go get 'em' attitude have
a blast no matter where they are.
Come here, you'll enjoy it, I know I do!
minnime
Having lived in HK for 2 years I can say HK is a cowboy
town compared to Singapore. What Singapore does not have
is the "anything goes" vibe that HK has in spades.
HK for me was non-stop partying in Wanchai with a bunch
of pretty wacky single expats. In 1998, people came and
went all the time. Now that I'm older and sleep has become
a priority I don't miss that anymore. You may also like
to know more expats here are married with families compared
to HK.

This place can be as decadent or hedonistic as you want
it to be, it is up to you. Have had some insane experiences
here.
Original
Hipchick
Well, I guess it depends on what your idea of fun is, but
I have always found that you get out of most any experience
what you put into it, so there may be times when you've
got to be a little creative with your ventures.
Meeting people and making friends will definitely enhance
the Singapore experience (especially if your friends are
from a variety of cultures)...
There are definitely things I miss from home and places
I miss (like the sandy white beaches of Sandestin, Florida
and the trendy, yet relaxed night life in Baytowne Wharf!)
But Singapore is a whole new experience and I've found that
it also offers experiences I couldn't have found back at
my emerald isle, like foot reflexology and fantastic 30
minute scalp massage shampoos at the hair salon!
And so many public transportation opportunities and so many
different types of foods to sample...
So I guess the answer to your question "is Singapore
fun?" would greatly depend on whether or not you are
fun and what your idea of fun is...just like anywhere else
in the world.
I'm sure some would have been bored to tears in my hometown
(but I loved it and never lacked for fun)...so fun is as
you make it, regardless of your geographical address. Best
of luck to you.
Aliya
Strange: Singapore is only a concrete jungle if you stick
in the centre.
If you move here, pull your finger out, don't live in the
Ang Moh ghettos close to Orchard Road, Holland Road, live
somewhere close to where you really love!
Sadly many expats can't seem to leave the OR/HV circle and
never see the real Singapore.
Superdan
The difference between Singapore and Hong Kong:
In HK, there is a "do or die" attitude. In Singapore,
there is a "wait and see what the government can do
for us" attitude.
Ezt Hea Amoi Zhua
Nice name. Didn't know that there is so much of similarity
between the Austrian dialect and the Chinese way to write
it.
I (born in Bavaria) lived in Singapore for two years. There
were things I loved, others I did hate. Just like it is
in my hometown.
Don't know what you exactly think of when you say "crazy
things" but as a former poster said. Fun and craziness
basically is something made by yourself. Some people consider
eating chicken rice as crazy, because they had potatoes
for decades. Some consider strolling around the Orchard
Towers as crazy, because they are used to go to a museum
or the zoo.
I consider myself as a pretty normal fun-loving woman (despite
I am married) with a sense for crazy things (because I am
married... generally interested in new things, cultures,
whatever.
Having fun in Singapore was never a problem to me. May be
because I've met the right people there, locals and expats.
I am sure that if you can manage to meet the right people
you'll have fun.
If you are looking for crazy things, don't worry, you will
have to rent a place and according to my own experience,
to deal with Singaporean landlords can be very crazy

true
Looks like you are going to wilt here.
Here's the truth. Singapore is not wild kind of fun, i.e.
no drugs, no nudity, no car racing, no easy one-night stands
etc. It's squeaky clean kind of family fun. Zoo, Botanic
Gardens, cosy pubs etc.
If you are disciplined, orderly, clean and like to roam
safely around after midnight for a quick snack, etc. this
is your place.
Wrongplaces
No easy one-night stands or nudity? Buddy you either have
no game or are going to the wrong places. You can pull here
almost every night.

IF U CALL FRUSTRATION 'CRAZY'... THEN ITS THE BEST PLACE!!!!!
YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN WHEN YOU GET HERE.... IF YOU THINK
THAT EAST AND WEST MEETS IN THIS COUNTRY... THINK AGAIN.
HAVE LIVED IN HONG KONG, CHINA AND MALAYSIA ... IN THOSE
COUNTRIES YOU MIX WITH THE LOCALS, HAVE HEAPS OF FUN, MIX
WITH WESTERNERS AND HAVE CRAZY FUN. TRY DOING IT IN SINGAPORE....
IT'S A CHALLENGE!
I DON'T CARE WHAT OTHERS POST AFTER THIS MESSAGE.. BUT I
HAVE TRIED SINGAPORE AND BELIEVE ME.. I AM WELL USED TO
ASIA AND MIXING WITH DIFFERENT CULTURES.. BUT IN SINGAPORE...
YOU CAN FORGET THAT IDEA!!! SOZ....

to Too True
That sounds like the worst place on this planet I could
possibly imagine to live.
Well, at least before I turned 87.
I honestly hope that it is not that terrible. Some people
seem to enjoy it there. Though I could imagine that many
of those just find Asia fascinating and the whole expat
lifestyle thing.
So far no one has said that they preferred Singapore over
HK (unless you have children I guess). But then a place
can still be cool without being as cool as HK
In any case, I am looking forward to it, it will be interesting,
at least at the beginning. And if it is not afterwards,
well, I hear it has a pretty big airport.....
ZenHuan
As a Singaporean, let me say this, it is true that it is
a challenge to mix with the locals here. But there are 30%
of them who are open to other culture and very sociable.
is a very easy place to live in, and if you know where to
go and meet the right people, you will expect lots of party
and fun "Nudity" band by Singapore... but some
people I know are very open to that. Also lots of lesbians
here. I would say bi-sexual
I met lots of people who know how to have fun and love this
place. Well, you just got to meet the right people. Typical
Locals are boring, so wasn't so bad an idea to stay with
some others from all over the world.
If you drink a lot, Singapore is expensive, otherwise, is
cool.
Big Man
Let me describe it that way. It does not matter where you
live, every place will become boring after a certain period,
some faster than the others. I am already living in HK for
6 month and although Hong Kong is a really wicked place,
there are already areas, which I am already eschewing. For
people who are mainly looking for party, well, welcome to
Hong Kong. Always crowded, dirty, no dress code, many pubs,
nice clubs. But retirement in Hong Kong. Well in this case
I would prefer Singapore for sure.
I was in Singapore over Christmas and really liked the country
coz there are clubs even better then in Hong Kong or do
not even exist there. But of course less clustered. Well
at least it should be up to you what you are looking for.
But I think in each places people are very open. I definitely
have to agree to one of my antecessors. Asia is definitely
better then Europe coz people are not so maladjusted.
too true
To zhouhaochen on worst place on planet:
As said, it's good if you like peace, safety and cleanliness.
To Wrongplaces on wrong places:
We are talking about Singapore as a whole. The attitude
of the people defines its culture. Remembered once 4 Jap
ladies decided to go topless at the hotel's swimming pool
to enjoy a good sunbath without bra lines. Most of the guests
there were enjoying the sight but it didn't last 5 minutes
before the Japs were hastily covered up by the hotel security
and ushered out of the pool area for outrage of modesty.
To both:
You are going to see this attitude in most everywhere you
go. It takes the fun out of most things once the ability
to appreciate life's finer moments is missing.
Best chance to keep things alive may be to seek out some
friends who are on same frequency and find time to get together
for a party or go on some short adventures to neighbouring
countries or island hopping.
Pebbles
OP
Despite the negativity above (and to follow) I would definitely
move to Singapore. It is a great experience and you can
do lots and lots of travelling to exotic places easily from
there.
As someone who has lived both in HK and Singapore I would
say that I would live in HK over SP any day. However saying
that your move to SP will bring you further opportunities
and experience so you should just go for it. Someone above
said that you should go to SP and take what you can from
it - good point. Go there, travel to all the exotic places,
eat fabulous food, laze round in boardies and flip flops
and sit round the pool.

I'm an IT guy from another Asian country (Philippines),
and when you're Asian and want to migrate to another asian
country that's better off - there are only three choices:
Japan, Singapore, and HK. So what if I'm going to Singapore,
maybe I want a clean, disciplined city for a change. And
yeah, I could get all the tech gadgets I want there, and
so what if I get bored, no one's stopping me from going
to Malaysia for a weekend outdoor fun, all it takes is a
bus ride. See you guys in Singapore this February!

A great future was promised us a very long time back, still
waiting, but got hinted it is actually meant for rich foreigners
and measures are being created for Singaporeans to do the
service for them.
Keuck
Boucher, I have resided in a couple of countries in my lifetime,
including the US and Australia. So I can tell you that the
life we have here is not all that bad. But I will be the
first to admit that if I work in a place like say Australia,
my pay would be doubled that of what I am making here in
my line of work - even after deducting the income tax (approx.
35-40%) I would be expected to pay, while the same would
go for the size of my residence (i.e. house/apartment).
I don't, however, quite agree with your view that measures
are being created for Singaporeans to do service for rich
foreigners. On the contrary, I think that the government
has done quite a fantastic job to make Singapore what it
is today, to achieve the level of quality of life that Singaporeans
enjoy today, especially after taking into consideration
all the geographic, demographic, and political constraints
that Singapore is subject to.
